All of us have been, or will be, touched by tragedy, loss, death and sorrow. It is inevitable and, ironically, a part of life. How we face these difficulties and struggles is vitally important. When life crashes in with a doctor’s prognosis, we need a direction to turn. When silence fills the phone-lines with news of unexpected loss, we need practical help. Dance in the Rain aids in that direction and provides practical, biblically compassionate counsel.
Angela A. Dockter-Harris has produced a resource for the grieving in Dance in the Rain. She masterfully weaves the spiritual discipline of journaling with a bible study to guide the reader through the healing process. I found the “workbook” or journal portion of the book to be an unexpected blessing. Angela has carefully thought through the multi-faceted prism of grieving and provides gentle direction to the reader. I am very appreciative of her use of Scripture through out her book and constant encouragement to see God’s hand in every circumstance.
I see the book in two basic parts: Journal & Bible Study. Under the Journaling aspect of the book Angela provides support and direction for (1) those who desire to journal about those who have passed away, so that others might remember them well, (2) those who are faced with dying and (3) those who are suffering a loss of a loved one. As the reader transitions to the Bible Study portion of the book, they are encouraged to deal with the natural responses to loss: Anger, Sorrow and Acceptance. Angela also deals with how one would deal with the loss of a loved one who may not be a Christian. What Dance in the Rain provides is a valuable tool for biblical counselors assisting folks through the grieving process, or the reality of impending death itself.
